Meta, Facebook’s parent company, reportedly paid a big Republican consulting firm in the US to start a campaign against TikTok.

TikTok, which just reached 1 billion monthly active users, is undeniably a major threat to Meta’s platforms, primarily Facebook.

This could be the reason why Meta apparently paid Targeted Victory, a GOP-linked firm, to help campaign against TikTok by saying the short-form video-sharing app is dangerous and “the real threat.”

The said campaign apparently included op-eds in a lot of major regional media outlets that promote “dubious stories” about TikTok to reporters and push local government officials to be critical of the platform.

Meta’s goal is to apparently attribute harmful, teen-targeted social media challenges such as “devious licks” to the competition. However, such challenges are said to be non-existent n the app.

“We are deeply concerned that the stoking of local media reports on alleged trends that have not been found on the platform could cause real world harm,” a statement from TikTok writes.
