The Philippines is now among the Top 3 countries most vulnerable to global web attacks despite lower detected cyberattacks than in 2023, based on a new report from cybersecurity and antivirus company Kaspersky.
The country recorded more than 14.1 million web threats targeting Filipino users in 2024, a much lower figure than the 26.16 million threats in 2023. However, despite almost a 50% decline in threats, the Philippines climbed from #4 in the world to #3, affecting 42.3% of users. This signals the continuing vulnerability and risks in the digital landscape.
Kaspersky’s general manager for Southeast Asia Yeo Siang Tiong, stated that cybercriminals have become more sophisticated and relentless, resulting in the rise in the cyber threats’ global ranking.
“This should serve as a wake-up call for businesses and individuals in the Philippines. Clearly, it’s time to strengthen their defenses and stay vigilant against evolving online threats,” Yeo added.
Completing the top five of the global web threat rankings are Belarus (#1) with 43.7%, Moldova (#2) with 43.2%, the Philippines (#3), and Russia and Ukraine with 42%.
Among the most common cyberattacks used by cybercriminals include web threats, where threat actors exploit vulnerabilities in web browsers, plugins, and online platforms to deliver malware to targets.
Drive-by downloads are also common, where a malware download occurs without users’ knowledge or consent when they visit compromised websites. On the other hand, social engineering attacks happen when hackers or scammers use emails, texts, or calls to influence users to download malicious files, click on links, go to fake websites, and more to get important personal or financial details.
Yeo also noted that since Filipinos are highly active online, cybersecurity is no longer optional but necessary in today’s digital landscape.
