Remember Blu-ray discs?

The once-popular high-definition (HD) compact discs, designed to replace DVDs, are finally ending their nearly two-decade run, officially marking the end of the optical media storage era.

According to Sony, the Blu-ray manufacturer thanked its customers for their continued patronage of Sony products. However, by February 2025, they will end production of all models of Blu-ray Disc media, MiniDiscs for recording, MD data for recording, and MiniDV cassettes.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment company also reiterated that there will be no successor models, putting Blu-ray in the category of obsolete Sony gadgets and technologies.

Sony ended the production of recordable consumer Blu-rays and optical discs in July 2024 but initially indicated that they would continue production for businesses and corporations until they become unprofitable.

While the Blu-ray disc technology was initially favored in the mid-2000s, the general public now prefers streaming services over physical optical disks. This closes the curtain for avid movie collectors and their media libraries. There’s no more “owning” your games and movies.
