Good news for smartphone units: the market continues to flourish in Q4 2019, and Apple is taking the lead in market share.

According to Canalys, a leading global technology market analyst firm, smartphone shipments upped by 1% as the market caps with over 396 million units shipped. Among all smartphone companies, Apple takes 1st place with 78.4 million units shipped (21.3% market share). This is because of the popular demand for iPhone 11 models which secured this boost.

Next to Apple is Samsung with a shipment of 70.8 million units (19.2% market share), followed by Huawei with 56 million units (15.2% market share). Securing 4th spot was Xiaomi with 33 million units shipped (9% market share), and finally OPPO with 30.3 million units distributed (8.2% market share).

Chinese vendors also contributed to the success of smartphone market growth. Research analyst Shengtao Jin pointed out that Chinese vendors have been particularly diligent in developing regions over the past quarter. This is very much proven as the smartphone industries in mainland China could stand amidst competition such as the rise of 5G networks.

Huawei and Samsung’s contest for top spot is also one of the highlights Canalyst pointed out. “2019 was meant to be the year Huawei challenged Samsung for the #1 spot.” says Canalyst analyst, Mo Jia, “…it drastically increased its portfolio, and slashed operating margin.” However, Samsung manages to retain its lead just as it did the year 2018.

In the end, it just goes to say that smartphones are not just a form of entertainment for people nationwide. The increase in market sales prove that these devices are important in our daily lives.
