A pocket projector that can be used as a wearable assistant with artificial intelligence is being developed by a company founded by former Apple employees.
The startup Humane, led by ex-Apple veterans Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, had been teasing its wearable for months. The device, which they claimed to be designed entirely from scratch for AI, finally made its public debut during a recent TED Talk, where Chaudri demoed it in action by displaying an incoming phone call interface in the palm of his hand.
Information on the hardware and features of the Humane device is scant, but reports suggest it will run on Android with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. It will also have voice control and language translation capability. In one of the leaked TED talk clips circulating online, Chaudhri was seen tapping a button to activate the device, which then gave a verbal English-to-French translation in Chaudhri’s own voice.
Another noteworthy capability of the device is its Catch Me Up feature. Instead of distracting you with constant notifications, the device will just give a summary of things and events you’ve missed, such as important emails and messages. The Humane device is also built to be standalone; unlike smartwatches, this 5G-capable device doesn’t need to be paired up with a smartphone to have full functionality.
Expect to hear more from Humane about its wearable later this year. The company has also put up a waitlist for interested users.
