DxOMark’s detailed camera review of Apple’s latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, is out, and most of the scores lag behind its top Android competitors.

The new iPhone 16 Pro Max is only at the top fourth spot in overall camera scores. With a score of 157 points, it’s behind the HONOR Magic6 Pro and the Google Pixel 9 Pro both scored 158, and the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra at 163 points.

For the sub-scores, the latest iPhone’s Photo score is only 157, putting it in the seventh spot. This category is still dominated by the Pura 70 Ultra with a score of 163, followed by the Pixel 9 Pro XL at 158.

However, it did dominate the Video score with a score of 157. It is followed by its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro, both scored 154 points.

In its full review, DxOMark concluded that the iPhone 16 Pro Max showed “inconsistencies when tele zooming, with images losing some detail within the 2x to 5x range.”

But other than that, the publication had nothing but praises. The Pros section commended the cameras’ “class-leading overall video quality”, outstanding color performance in images, Apple’s new customizable colors to fit the users’ taste and preferences, new editing options, “extremely accurate” image preview to capture, and zero shutter lag.
