Goodbye, Internet porn. At least that’s what the government wants by ordering Internet service providers and telecommunication companies to block access to pornography websites.

The National Telecommunications Commission recently issued a memorandum circular, instructing Internet service providers to prohibit its subscribers from viewing pornographic content online. Be it a blog, website, or any lewd content posted online, they will be filtered out. ISPs are tasked to do this by installing a carrier-grade monitoring software. The memorandum is in accordance to the Republic Act No. 9775 that labels child pornography as against the law.

Update: NTC has clarified that its memorandum circular is only for child porn. Other adult-oriented websites will not be filtered out.

This may be surprising to those satiating their sexual pleasure online, but the Philippine government has good reasons to block porn. The country is listed among the most frequent visitors of adult website Pornhub.

Not all porn may be blocked despite the government’s efforts on cybercrime, but at least the majority of it will be.
