The Xiaomi Mi Band and Mi Band 2 became a hit because of their simplicity, affordability, and extra-long battery life. Now, Xiaomi is expected to step it up a notch with the upcoming Mi Band 3.

The original Mi Band only had three LED lights on the front that tells you whats going on with the device. The screen was not introduced until the Mi Band 2 where they also added capacitive buttons to help you navigate through its straightforward interface.

But with the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Band 3, the company is rumored to use an OLED touchscreen display. This, in theory, will provide a more intuitive way of interacting with the smart band. Plus, the use of an OLED panel means that it will be power efficient — in line with previous Mi smart bands.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 was recently spotted being worn by Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, in an event in China. It shows a smart band with a screen that protrudes from the body itself.

Reports suggest that the display is removable for recharging, and quite possibly, for swappable bands that provide different looks.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is expected to have improved movement tracking, heart rate monitoring, and will feature more health-related information.

Additionally, it is said to have an IP67 water and dust resistance certification, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC. With NFC, there’s also a huge possibility that the Mi Band 3 will have mobile payments capabilities built-in just like the new Apple Watch.

However, these are still rumors and leaks. We’ll just have to wait for Xiaomi’s official word as it gets released on May 31.
