Ookla, the folks behind internet performance metrics site Speedtest.net, released a new report regarding the state of 5G services across the world, especially here in the Philippines.
According to Ookla, India is leading the expansion of the 5G Standalone (SA) network in the Emerging Asia Pacific (EMAP) region. But, as per the Speedtest data for Q2 2024, it was surpassed by the Philippines in terms of 5G speeds.
The Philippines managed to record a median 5G SA download speed of 375.4Mbps, while India comes second at 298.22. The third placer, Thailand, only recorded 223.61Mbps.

Still, India’s figures are quite impressive as their Q2 2024 figures are 138.08Mbps better than the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, the Philippines made a 71.58Mbps improvement.
Ookla highlighted how Globe Telecom, the first provider in the country to introduce 5G non-standalone service, expanded its outdoor coverage to 97.44% of the capital by the end of the first half of 2023. They also introduced 5G SA private networks and network slicing.
For the whole Asia Pacific, South Korea is still number one in 5G SA performance with a median download speed of 729.98Mbps and upload of 77.65Mbps.
But, South Korea is only in the top 2 for the global list as the U.A.E. dominates with 879.89Mbps download and 77.65Mbps upload speeds.
