Globe has partnered with Google to successfully transmit high-speed internet wirelessly across Laguna Lake using beams of light.
The recent field trial involved technology from Google’s Project TAARA and Globe’s infrastructure subsidiary, FINSI. It demonstrated that Free Space Optics (FSO) can be a powerful tool for providing connectivity in places where laying fiber optic cables is difficult.
This technology works by transmitting data between two units using invisible, focused light beams. It offers a promising alternative to physical cables, especially for connecting islands or remote communities separated by water or rough terrain.

The system established a strong 10 gigabit per second link over a distance of 11 kilometers. A significant challenge was the environment, as approximately 80% of the connection traveled over the lake.
The connection was put through extensive testing to ensure it was stable and reliable. It passed all performance checks, including a continuous 24-hour stress test, meeting the company’s technical standards.
The success of this trial suggests that light-based wireless technology could play a key role in bringing high-speed internet to more parts of the Philippines faster and more efficiently.
