Globe Telecom recently piloted its 50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network (50G PON) technology, which improves its current 10G PON system by fivefold. This next-gen technology will boost the country’s connectivity.

The said pilot test was done at the Globe Valero Telepark in Makati City, and a new broadband connectivity speed has been set to support the growing needs of its customers and partners.

The 50G PON technology can deliver high-speed connection of up to 50 Gigabits per second (Gbps), better throughput, reduced latency, and more efficient connectivity for households and businesses.

At this speed, the telco added that it could also support high-bandwidth applications, such as 8K streaming, real-time cloud gaming, and HD teleconferencing. This unlocks opportunities for enhanced smart home systems and cities, telemedicine, e-learning, and advanced manufacturing.

“Globe is committed to providing Filipinos with the best possible internet experience, and this breakthrough in 50GPON technology is a key component of our future-forward approach to broadband connectivity,” Globe Vice President James Lim said.

A Passive Optical Network, or PON, also uses fiber optic cables to provide Ethernet connectivity from a data source to its endpoints. However, PON is “passive” and use unpowered devices that distribute one signal to multiple branches.
