The Philippines‘ Unified 911 system has rolled out a new tool that translates calls in real time with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The new 911 translation feature is built into the NEXiS Connect platform from NGA 911. It picks up what the caller says and changes it into English or Filipino for the operator on the other end.

Right now, the system works with Spanish, Italian, German, French, Filipino, and English. The company plans to add support for more languages soon.

The setup also turns spoken words into text. This helps dispatchers quickly figure out what the problem is and where it’s happening while the person is still on the line.

There is also an option to reach operators through Facebook Messenger. This is useful for foreigners who do not have a local SIM card or do not know the correct dialing codes. Messages go straight to the same system that handles voice calls. Operators can reply in English, and the system translates their responses back into the caller’s preferred language.

The tool also allows dispatchers to walk callers through first aid steps, such as doing CPR or stopping bleeding, without confusion caused by language differences.

The system brings together various ways to reach emergency services. People can send photos, live video, and their exact GPS location through the same platform. This means operators do not have to switch between different apps or screens to help people in need.

Another advantage is that the 911 system runs on the cloud. If a local command center goes down because of a storm or flood, calls can be rerouted to another center. This keeps the emergency line working even during disasters.
