The new M4-powered Macs have introduced a new technology for the mainstream market: Thunderbolt 5.
To go with the new Macs, the company is offering a new Apple Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable as a sold-separately accessory if you want to take full advantage of the devices’ high-speed connectivity.
Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports are found on the M4 Pro and M4 Max models of the latest MacBook Pro 2024 models as well as the M4 Pro variant of the new Mac Mini 2024.
The new USB-C standard offers transfer speeds of up to 120Gbps — 4x more than Thunderbolt 4’s 40Gbps rated speeds. You can use it on an M4 Max-powered Mac to power up to four 6K@60Hz displays and one 4K@144Hz screen over HDMI, or with two 6K@60Hz screens and one up to 8K@60Hz external screen over HDMI.
As per the website, it also supports USB 4 data transfers at 80Gbps speeds, DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20), up to 240W power delivery (PD), and daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices.
The cable has a braided design that “coils without tangling.” Available in a 1-meter length, the Apple Thunderbolt Pro Cable has a price of Php3,990.
