We’re now on the third day of Apple’s “week of Mac” and they finally introduced the Macs that we’re actually really excited about, the M4-powered MacBook Pro 14 and 16.
The new MacBook Pro 14 and 16 M4 models are powered by the vanilla M4 and M4 Pro, which we already saw on the new Mac mini, and an all-new M4 Max that offers up to 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, and configurable up to 128GB of unified memory and 8TB of storage.
Compared to the M3-powered MacBook Pros, the newer models have 2x faster ray-tracing engine and 2x better neural engine for Apple Intelligence tasks.
Apple also claims that an M4 Max-powered MacBook Pro 16-inch is 41.9x faster in video retiming performance in Topaz Video AI, 64.9x faster in render performance via Redshift, and 18.3x better in World of Warcraft: The War Within.
Both models still have the same Liquid Retina XDR displays with 120Hz ProMotion technology and 1600 nits of peak brightness via HDR. There’s a resolution of 3024 x 1964 for the 14-inch model and 3456 x 2234 for the 16-inch.
The 14-inch models will come with 72.4Wh batteries and ships with a 70W adapter for the M4 model and 96W for the M4 Pro and M4 Max. The 16-inch variant gets a 100Wh capacity with 140W USB-C charging. Apple said the M4 model can last up to 24 hours while the top-tier M4 Max 16-inch variant can last up to 18 hours.
Apple has updated the webcam, which now uses a 12-megapixel sensor with Center Stage technology and has improved video quality.
Disappointingly, it is capped at WiFi 6E and no WiFi 7. We’re also expecting the latest Bluetooth 5.4 instead of 5.3. On the upside, the port selection is quite beefy, with the base 14-inch model getting a third USB-C. Plus, the M4 Pro and M4 Max models are upgraded to Thunderbolt 5 ports.
The 2024 MacBook Pro 14 and 16 with M4 chips, as well as the new Mac mini and M4-powered iMac, is now listed on the Apple Philippines website with availability dates yet to be known.
