Apple’s week-long Mac announcement continues onto day two with the unveiling of the new 2024 Mac Mini models.
Launched a day after the new iMac, the new Mac Mini 2024 has been upgraded to M4 and M4 Pro chips. New Macs are also coming tomorrow, and we expect them to sport the new ARM silicon chips.
Apple claims the new Mac Mini is 7.2x faster in image processing via Affinity Photo, 2.3x better in Microsoft Excel, 13.1x more capable on on-device AI speech-to-text in MacWhisper, and 13.3x better gaming performance in World of Warcraft: The War Within.
Of course, the new chips are also built for Apple Intelligence. Apple’s suite of AI features includes Writing Tools for text rewriting and proofreading and an image generator called Image Playground.
All this muscle is packed in a much smaller body that’s almost the size of the Apple TV box. It is 1/20 the size of its predecessor as it’s only 5″ x 5″ in dimensions. Plus, it’s incredibly light weighing just 670 grams.
Apple also highlighted that it is the first carbon-neutral Mac made of 50% recycled material, manufactured using 100% renewal energy, and shipped using low-carbon methods.
For easy access, Apple put two USB-C ports on the front and, yes, a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The rear has a power port, full-size HDMI, and three Thunderbolt ports — Thunderbolt 4 for the M4 models and beefier Thunderbolt 5 for the M4 Pro variant that offers DisplayPort 2.1 support and 120Gbps of data speeds. Oh, and if you’re looking for the power button, it’s now at the rear left side at the bottom, near the vents.
