Consumers who want a small and compact smartphone usually have no choice but to go with underpowered devices. Thankfully, there’s the ASUS Zenfone 9.
Like its predecessor, the ASUS Zenfone 9 has a small build with its 5.9-inch display, making it really easy to operate with one hand. But, don’t be fooled by its size, as this is actually a proper flagship smartphone.
Talking about the display itself, this one boasts a fancy OLED panel from Samsung that has an FHD panel. It even has an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling for better responsiveness in games.
The Zenfone 9 also gets really bright at 1,100nits and has 151.9% sRGB color coverage, HDR10+ support, and delta E < 1 color calibration.
Of course, the main highlight here is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset — which easily makes it a real flagship device.
It is paired with a larger vapor cooling chamber and can be had with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.
We then have a clean and neat design on the back that’s made from a polymer material, which is tougher to scratch or crack. The front is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It also has an IP68 certification for being dust and water-resistant.
The back also has two large lenses, with amplified sizes due to how small the device actually is. The main one uses a 50-megapixel IMX766 sensor, which also comes with a 6-axis hybrid gimbal stabilizer.
Meanwhile, the second one has a 113-degree ultra-wide lens that sits in front of a 12-megapixel IMX363 Sony sensor. While on the front, we have a 12-megapixel IMX663 sensor for selfies.
The new Zenfone 9 can shoot up to 8K@24fps videos, has dual PDAF, and of course, an LED flash.
Due to its size, the device only has a 4,300mAh battery. Not the standard 5,000mAh, but at least it’s bigger than what the Zenfone 8 had. It is paired with a 30W HyperCharge adapter. Oh, and you can double-tap the back for remappable quick commands.
It then ships with the latest Android 12 operating system and is secured to receive 2 major upgrades and 2 years of security patches. There’s also the Game Genie, similar to what the ROG Phone offers, for better optimization when playing games.
What’s more, ASUS unveiled the Connex Accessories Set, with some of them being quite smart, too. For one, enabling the kickstand automatically opens a streaming app.
There’s also a cardholder, connex case, and a smart backpack mount with a strap that can automatically lunch the camera app, act as a video stabilizer, and let you easily check the map and whatnot during outdoor activities.
The ASUS Zenfone 8 has a price of EUR799 (around Php45,300), EUR849 (around Php48,100), EUR899 (around Php50,900) for the 8GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB, and 16GB/256GB versions, respectively.
It will be initially available in Europe, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Later on, it will be available in North and South America, Indonesia, and Japan. Release details in the Philippines are yet to be known.
