The tablet market finds itself in a uniquely intriguing position within the personal computing industry. On one hand, smartphones have become increasingly powerful and more prominent, rendering the need for an additional device for entertainment purposes obsolete. Simultaneously, laptops have been undergoing a transformation, becoming lighter and catering to those seeking the utmost portability in the form of thin and light devices.
As a result, tablets are facing a dilemma as they navigate an identity crisis in their quest to establish a distinct position in the market. This brings us to HUAWEI, a company that is rising to the challenge with not just one, but two new MatePads. These devices aim to deliver a PC-like experience while retaining the convenience and versatility of tablets.
Today, we will be reviewing the MatePad 11.5″, a more budget-friendly model. Join us as we explore the features and performance of this tablet, as HUAWEI seeks to redefine the tablet experience in an ever-evolving market.

Design and Build Quality

The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5″ is available exclusively in Graphite Black, offering a sleek and sophisticated color option. The tablet’s design boasts an all-metal construction, lending a durable and premium feel when held. With a remarkably thin chassis measuring just 6.85mm, it not only exudes elegance but also ensures portability. Surprisingly, despite the materials used, it doesn’t feel excessively heavy. It’s easy to pick up and use regardless of whether it’s in vertical or horizontal orientation.

On the back of the tablet, you’ll find a 13-megapixel rear camera discreetly positioned in the top right corner. The left side is home to the power button, while the top edge houses the volume rocker and SIM tray for added convenience.

To further enrich the multimedia experience, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5″ is equipped with quad speakers, with two located on each side. The bottom of the tablet features a magnetic connector designed explicitly for seamlessly attaching the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5″ Smart Keyboard, enabling enhanced user productivity by making typing more comfortable.
Compared to HUAWEI’s previous tablet keyboard, we liked this one better as it looks more durable and comfortable to type on, without much adjustments needed.

Display
The MatePad 11.5″ lives up to its namesake with an impressive 11.5-inch IPS display boasting a resolution of 2200 x 1440 pixels. Even upon close scrutiny, the visuals remain sharp and detailed. Equipped with an IPS display, this tablet delivers vibrant and vivid colors, although it does exhibit a middling contrast ratio. Nevertheless, the MatePad 11.5″ offers a remarkably fluid and smooth user experience, thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate.

However, we do have one minor gripe. The display color gamut options provided by the MatePad 11.5″ feel somewhat limited. While other brands offer convenient presets like vivid, warm, or DCI-P3 color gamut, this tablet only allows users to fine-tune the color temperature. This may be a minor inconvenience for those looking for pre-set options to suit their preferences. Anyway, since this is a budget tablet, we didn’t really mind it.

Software and Performance
The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5″ is equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, Qualcomm’s latest midrange chip, offering reliable and efficient performance. With 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, the tablet ensures smooth multitasking and ample space for your files.
HUAWEI MatePad 11.5 Benchmark Scores

During day-to-day use, the chipset proves to be quite snappy, minimizing any potential stutters and lag. Switching between apps and scrolling in our social feed are fairly smooth as well.
When it comes to gaming, the tablet delivers a decent performance, capable of running most games at medium to high settings while maintaining acceptable frame rates. We tried the esports games like PUBG Mobile, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and all ran well without any issues.

Since it’s a HUAWEI device, there’s no official Google Services support built-in. That can be remedied by installing GBox or GSpace, but the experience is not as smooth when it’s official. Good thing it’s a tablet, so we didn’t mind doing the extra steps needed to get additional pps and games installed.
To be fair, HUAWEI’s AppGallery has greatly improved since its launch. There are now more apps and games available, including essentials like local banking apps. Unfortunately, we still needed to rely on third-party APK websites for some apps we always use.

Additionally, it showcases surprising competence when it comes to video editing using CapCut, particularly with 1080p footage. Overall, the MatePad 11.5″ provides a solid performance for a range of everyday tasks.
For video streaming, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5-inch is really great. We watched videos on YouTube and other streaming platforms without any problems. However, there seems to be an occasional issue with Netflix where the video doesn’t load at all. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app didn’t work either.
We also tried the M-Pencil and it works great. There are no compatibility problems with creative apps for drawing and 2D animation. In addition, drawing sketches and erasing mistakes are pretty easy as well.
Cameras
Camera quality is not typically a standout feature for tablets, and the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5″ follows this trend. While it can serve you adequately for basic tasks like document scanning or quick snapshots for work-related purposes, I wouldn’t recommend relying on it for more demanding photography needs.

However, it’s worth noting that the tablet does support up to 4K30 video recording with its rear camera and 1080p30 for the front camera. This capability can prove useful for video calls or online meetings, ensuring clear and high-quality video output. So, while the camera might not excel in all areas, it still offers convenient features for certain practical applications.

Audio
The MatePad 11.5″ enhances your audio experience with the inclusion of four speakers. These speakers are designed to produce realistic sound, creating an immersive audio environment. The HUAWEI Histen 8.1 system further enhances the audio quality by providing options for adjusting the sound range and adding an extra layer of bass.
We were really impressed with the loudness and clarity, which elevates the experience when watching movies and TV shows.

Additionally, the tablet features an AI noise-canceling microphone, enabling clear and convenient video calls. With this microphone, you can enjoy the benefits of using it as a reliable audio input source for various purposes, such as utilizing it for microphone-enabled applications. It ensures that your video calls are hassle-free and the sound is crystal clear.
Battery and Charging
The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5″ is equipped with a powerful 7,700mAh battery and comes bundled with a 40W fast charger for speedy recharging. With heavy use for both work and entertainment purposes, we were pleasantly surprised that it was able to last a full day without issues, oftentimes with 20-30% left to spare.

Even with extensive video streaming and full volume, this tablet can last for several hours. For moderate use, it can easily get through two full days. This extended battery endurance allows you to confidently rely on the tablet without constantly worrying about running out of power.
Whether you’re engaging in productivity tasks or indulging in multimedia entertainment, the MatePad 11.5″ ensures that you have ample battery life to get through your daily activities.
Verdict
HUAWEI MatePad 11.5 provides excellent value for your money. The package includes a large tablet, along with a keyboard and stylus, giving you everything you need to be productive on the go. With support for PC-like features, this tablet is capable of handling both work and entertainment.
Without a doubt, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5 is an ideal choice for individuals on a tight budget, prioritizing portability without compromising effectiveness. If you need a portable and efficient device to accomplish your work tasks, the MatePad 11.5 2023 is definitely worth considering.
