TECNO launched its second-generation flip phone, the TECNO Phantom V Flip2 and it looks really promising — at least compared to its predecessor.
Upon seeing the first renders, the V Flip2 already looks so much better than the first V Flip. The cover screen is bigger, the design feels more polished, better battery, and more.
In our TECNO Phantom V Flip2 review, we’ll see how far TECNO‘s budget flip phones have come with just two generations. Also, we want to know if it’s actually a practical device as a daily driver, or if everything is just a gimmick.

Design and Build Quality
From the bold and bizarre circular cover screen of the first Flip, TECNO gave in and joined the bandwagon by using a larger second screen that looks a lot like other flip phones in the market right now.

The Phantom V Flip2 has a 3.64-inch cover display, which also wraps around the dual camera lenses to fill up the surface. While it has been stripped of the uniqueness its predecessor has, the second screen on this one looks much cleaner and more usable.

Flip it open and you’re greeted with a tall 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED foldable screen. The crease is very noticeable and deep. Your eyes can get used to it and after a few days with the device, I stopped caring for it. After all, it’s an affordable flip phone, so imperfections like this are expected.

The steel hinge feels solid and sturdy. It opens on almost any angle and the movement is pretty smooth.

We then have a shiny, flat aluminum frame that improves grip, and makes flipping it open really easy.
Sadly, unlike most flip phones, it lacks ingress protection for dust and water resistance. On the upside, it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass on the front, while the Green colorway I have shows a marble-like texture on the back that really adds a premium look and feel to the device.

Taking a tour, we have the 6.9-inch display on the front, with thick bezels acceptable for a foldable display. A punch-hole on top holds the 32-megapixel selfie camera.

Left side is clean, while the right has the volume control and lock/power switch that doubles as the fingerprint scanner. They’re not the most well-made buttons I’ve tested, but they get the job done.

The top has the secondary microphone and the Dolby Atmos logo. At the bottom, we have the SIM tray that can hold two nano SIM cards back-to-back. It is joined by the primary microphone, USB-C port, and the main loudspeaker.

The back has the said 3.64-inch covered screen, two 50-megapixel sensors, and a pill-shaped dual-LED flash.
I definitely liked the TECNO Phantom V Flip2’s design than its predecessor. The lack of ingress protection is a bit of a bummer, but for the price, I’m just happy that it looks modern and feels well-made.
Display and Audio
The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 has a 6.9-inch FHD+ LTPO AMOLED screen with a 2640 x 1080 pixel resolution, ~413ppi, 10-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness.

Display quality from the main has been good. Colors pop, brightness is enough even at sunny outdoors, and sharpness is ample. The lack of HDR is unfortunate, though.
The screen brightness can get really low to keep your eyes safe, if you’re scrolling on TikTok before going to bed. The high screen refresh rate is also felt and made things feel extra smooth.

Let’s then proceed to the 3.64-inch cover squarish display, with a 1066 x 1056 pixel resolution. It has the standard 60Hz refresh rate, which I don’t mind.
This one can get very bright, which is important for reading notifications quickly while outdoors. But what I really appreciate is the size, as I can now use almost any app with it. Compared to the previous generation’s tiny circular screen, this one is very useful.

As for audio, the stereo speakers on the TECNO Phantom V Flip2 offer decent sound with nice treble and audible bass, albeit the volume is lacking. On the upside, Dolby Atmos is here, which should be useful if you have an equally supported external audio device.
Hardware and Performance
The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 is powered by a 2.6GHz MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor — which is oddly a downgrade from its predecessor’s Dimensity 8050. It also has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage. Overall, there’s a lot of similarities to its predecessor.
TECNO Phantom V Flip2 Benchmark Scores

Daily performance felt the same as its predecessor, so I’m bummed with the lack of speed improvements.
But that doesn’t mean it’s slow. On its own, the Phantom V Flip2 actually offers satisfactory performance. You can still browse through social media, message with friends, edit TikTok videos, and more without any issues. I just wish it came with a bit more processing power.

Now, let’s see how well it performs in games. Genshin Impact was playable but only under Low graphics settings. Call of Duty Mobile also ran fine under High/Very High, as well as PUBG Mobile on Balanced/Ultra and Farlight84 with HDR/High.
Lighter games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Asphalt Legends Unite ran smoothly using the highest available graphics settings.

If you plan on gaming a lot, there are similarly priced devices that offer a much better gaming experience sans the unique form factor. In addition, the Phantom V Flip2 suffers from surface overheating that can be irritating to touch, albeit it did manage to sustain respectable frame rates. This flip phone has a lot going for it, but gaming is not its strong suit.
Game | Graphics Settings |
Call of Duty: Mobile | • Graphics Quality: High • Frame Rate: Very High |
Farlight84 | • Graphics Quality: HDR • Frame Rate: High |
PUBG Mobile | • Graphics Quality: Balanced • Frame Rate: Ultra |
Genshin Impact | • Graphics Quality: Low (Default) |
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang | • Graphics Quality: Ultra • Frame Rate: Super • HD Mode: On |
Asphalt Legends Unite | • Visual Quality: High Quality • Frame Rate: 60 |
Software and User Interface
The TECNO Phantom V Flip2, unfortunately, still ships with the Android 14 operating system with TECNO’s HiOS 14. But if you can get past the outdated software, the device’s interface is actually decent and usable.

First thing I really liked was the benefits of the tall screen. More texts are displayed on the screen so you can read long texts easier, more apps are displayed on a single home screen, and you can see more from an email even with the on-screen keyboard on.

Customization options are still plenty. You can even create your own wallpaper via the built-in AI Wallpaper Generator. There are also different Always-On Display (AOD) wallpapers to choose from.

There’s a dedicated section in the settings called the Folding Screen Zone that lets you customize whatever’s displayed on the cover screen.

Speaking of the cover screen, you can do more with it now that it’s bigger. You can unlock it using patterns so you can see the apps in the 3×3 layout, along with the time, date, battery status, and more on the side.
In addition, pretty much any app works with the cover screen now. You can choose whatever app you want to access with it. Apps like YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok worked fine on the second display.

The Special Function section in the settings hosts a bunch of cool features. There’s the Dynamic Port, which works like Apple’s Dynamic Island. Floating Windows and Smart Panel helps improve multitasking, MemFusion for virtual RAM expansion, App Twin for easier multi-account management, and Smart Hub feature lets you quickly transfer files between apps using a drag-and-drop gesture.

For security, both the side-mounted fingerprint scanner and face unlock worked really well in our testing. They also worked great with the cover screen, with the face unlock using the rear cameras to recognize the user’s face.

TECNO’s game window can be accessed whatever game you’re playing. It shows you real-time CPU and GPU usage, option between performance modes, hides notifications for less distraction, screenshot or screen recording capabilities, and more.

The camera app looks pretty straightforward, but I’m not a fan of using the term “AI Cam” instead of the standard “Photo.”
TECNO used Emoji Keyboard as the default, but I prefer Google Keyboard, so I switched it back.
Cameras
The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 has two 50-megapixel cameras on the back. The main one uses a generic ISOCELL S5KGN5 sensor with an f/1.9 aperture and optical image stabilization. The other has an ultra-wide lens with PDAF. A 32-megapixel sensor is on the front for selfies.

Daylight images from the main camera are usable, but nothing to brag about. Details are sharp enough, the dynamic range is decent, and the colors are passable. However, I noticed weird exaggeration in vibrant colors like the greens and the reds.

Low-light shots looked surprisingly decent, especially if you can get to have respectable artificial lighting. I’ve seen much better photos at this price point, but it’s important to remember that this is a flip phone, so compromises have to be made.

The 50-megapixel ultra-wide surprisingly managed to express colors better. Details are good, too, but noise and grains creep up fast when the lighting gets challenging.

The 32-megapixel front camera takes great selfies. The contrast can be off at times, but the shots are well-detailed, have realistic skin tones, and the dynamic range is fine.
Bear in mind that you can also use the rear cameras for selfies thanks to the cover screen.

The bottom line here is that the cameras on the TECNO Phantom V Flip2 are nothing special. There are better shooters out there for the same price, but without the flip form factor.
Battery and Charging
The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 managed to have a bigger battery than its predecessor. It now has a 4,720mAh capacity from 4,000mAh. That’s a massive 720mAh uplift from the previous generation.

Like the hardware’s performance, the form factor is a major consideration here. For a flip phone, the battery is quite decent. It can last for a day of light to moderate use, but if you’re a power user, you might be better off with a regular bar phone with a larger battery capacity.
The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 lasted for around 11 hours in both our PCMark synthetic battery test and YouTube video loop test. That’s lower than the average score we get of around 14 hours on other phones.

The 70W charger can fill it up quite fast, though, so there’s not much downtime. A quick 15-minute charge already gets you from 0 to 38%. A full charge takes about 49 minutes.
- 15mins: 0-38%
- 30mins: 67%
- 45mins: 94%
- 49mins: FULL
Verdict
TECNO already nailed their flip phone game despite being only on the second generation. The TECNO Phantom V Flip2 is miles ahead of its predecessor without much difference in the price tag.

It sports a bigger cover display, decent cameras, reliable performance for day-to-day tasks, an attractive and portable design, and good battery life with speed charging. All of these features make for a reliable and practical foldable phone that’s more than a gimmick and you can actually use on a daily basis.
Still, it’s far from perfect. Image processing could be better, the lack of ingress protection is unfortunate, and the fact that it still runs on Android 14 is a bummer. Also, it’s not made for extensive gaming due to the surface heat it generates.

But if you’re thinking of dabbling into owning a foldable phone without breaking the bank, this is a good starter. The combination of the form-factor, features, and price are just tough to beat.
