Market research firm International Data Corp. has released the latest data on the worldwide shipments of smart vacuum devices, with over 18.5 million units shipped in 2023 for a total market value of $7.8 billion.

Smart vacuums, or as IDC describes them, robotic vacuums capable of autonomous cleaning and designed for home use, saw significant activity predominantly in China and the United States. The former emerged as the leading market, surpassing the US in early 2023 with 4.6 million units shipped.

Major Chinese manufacturers, including Ecovacs, Roborock, and Xiaomi, managed to rank among the top five global brands, with US-based iRobot clinging to its lead position in 2023 albeit with a slight margin.

The players within the smart vacuum industry continue to face fierce competition, according to IDC China senior analyst Quorra Liu, who believes international expansion will be main driver to a manufacturer’s future success. Enhancing product tech, smart home integration, and adapting to local market needs are also important, according to Liu.

IDC notes that smart vacuums have become an essential part in the consumers’ smart home experience. They often serve as an entry point for consumers to improve their homes with robotics. Pricing, however, remains a challenge especially for the budget and emerging markets.
