Honda and Sony announced plans to build an electric vehicle with a built-in gaming console. Honda will provide the battery packs while Sony will handle the electronics.

The joint venture, called Sony Honda Mobility, will focus on developing autonomous vehicles and ride-sharing fleets.

Sony Honda Mobility President Kawanishi said that the joint venture will leverage the entertainment side of Sony’s operations to compete against Tesla. “We want to offer something different,” he said in an interview. He added that Sony Honda Mobility wants to appeal to consumers’ sense of adventure.

He went on to say that his team is working on a concept that could be ready for market in about five years. This would mean that the project would likely debut around 2025.

According to Kawanishi, the joint venture will look to use Sony‘s vast library of content — including movies, games, TV shows, and music — to help differentiate itself from competitors.

“Our goal is to bring the best experience possible to our customers,” he said. “That includes having great content.”

While Sony’s PlayStation brand is known for video games, Kawanishi says that the entertainment giant sees potential in the automotive industry. “There are many opportunities for us in mobility,” he said. “But there are no guarantees.”
