The ever-changing Dota 2 game has received countless updates over the years to introduce new heroes, gameplay features, and item customizations. All these changes have resulted in Dota 2 requiring a significant amount of disk space, and in 2023 it’s become the largest it has ever been.

What is Dota 2’s storage space requirement?

If you look at the Steam listing of Dota 2, the system requirements state that the game requires 60GB of available space for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The actual space consumed is considerably less when you inspect the local files after installing the game. As of this year, Dota 2 requires 46.5GB of disk space.

Though Steam has overstated the disk space requirement, think of it as future-proofing since you can expect the game to even get bigger by next year. Dota 2 consumed around 38GB in 2022 and around 30GB the year before that. So if the trend continues, the game will easily get past 50GB of disk space by 2024.

Is there a way to lower the disk space used by the DOTA 2 game and updates?

As it is, you’ll just have to accept that the base installation of Dota 2 requires that much space. Video games these days, because of their improved graphics, large worlds, and other high-fidelity content, have a large storage footprint.

Who knows, maybe someday Dota 2 developer Valve decides to release an optimization update to lower the disk space required for the game. Other than that, you can at least stop the game from taking up further space by doing the following:

  • Delete match replays, screenshots, and game recordings
  • Uninstall unnecessary language files
  • Uninstall unused downloadable content
