Big sales events spike gamer spending as irresistible deals and recommendations quickly overwhelm frugal intentions.
Security solutions provider Kaspersky commissioned a global study that surveyed 4,000 consumers (gamers included) in several countries like Germany, India, and Brazil to understand shopping behaviors during sale events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Unsurprisingly, the results show that most respondents increased their spending, attracted by the desirable discounts available during these events.
Buying decisions can be unpredictable. Seventy-one percent of the surveyed gamers said they bought items from their shopping lists that they’ve prepared in advance, but 48 percent of gamers ended up failing to follow through with their list and made spontaneous purchases instead. Despite their impulsiveness, 46 percent of all respondents acknowledged that they don’t always get the best deals during sales.

To help with their purchase decisions, 58 percent of all respondents said they turn to influencers and bloggers for shopping recommendations. Smartphones have become the primary shopping tool for many consumers, with 79 percent of respondents using their mobile devices during sales. Only 47 percent made use of their laptops for sales shopping, and 44 percent using their PCs.
The study also found that cryptocurrency is becoming a mainstream payment method during sales events, with 78 percent of the respondents aged between 25 and 44 having cryptocurrency ownership. Consumer knowledge of and comfort with cryptocurrency are also increasing, with many believing it to be the future of online shopping. However, about 20 percent express concerns about being victimized by wallet hacking during sales.
