Sony‘s anticipated update to the PlayStation 5, commonly referred to as the PS5 Pro, is making headlines with new details about its improved hardware. Recent leaks suggest a focus on enhancements that will cater to gamers looking for more power and better visuals.

Digital Foundry has revealed details into the PS5 Pro’s graphical processing unit (GPU), which is expected to operate at a base clock speed of 2.18GHz and can be boosted up to 2.35GHz when needed. To support more complex graphics, such as ray tracing, the console’s L1 and L0 cache sizes will be increased, to allow improved image quality in games that utilize this technology.

Internal documents believed to come from Sony’s developer resources point to the inclusion of 30 Work Group Processors (WGP) within the PS5 Pro. This marks a significant increase over the original model and could potentially lead to a maximum output of 33.5 teraflops, more than 3x as much as the current PS5’s 10.23 teraflops.

Despite the considerable theoretical increase in computing power, expectations for in-game performance gains are tempered, with predictions suggesting a 45% improvement. This would nonetheless translate into a more fluid gaming experience, possibly bringing higher resolutions and faster frame rates into play.

The PS5 Pro is also set to incorporate advanced technologies from DirectX 12 Ultimate. With features like variable-rate shading, the console will be able to adjust details in different screen areas as needed, optimizing performance. An enhanced anti-aliasing method known as hybrid MSAA will also be included, to give developers new ways to improve image quality without compromising smooth gameplay.

Additional hardware upgrades for the PS5 Pro reportedly include faster memory speeds at 18,000 MT/s and the integration of Sony’s PSSR proprietary upscaling and anti-aliasing solution.

As for availability, there is speculation that the PlayStation 5 Pro could be released in late 2024, ideally positioned for the holiday shopping season.
