Counterfeit-Piracy-Philippines

It looks like counterfeiting and piracy, despite the new measures conducted by government agencies and companies, are far from being gone.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) said that they received 151 counterfeiting reports and complaints from consumers and rights holders last year, 2021.

This new record beats 2020’s 121 reports with a 25% year-on-year (YoY) increase.

113 or 75% of the reports came from consumers, 29 or 19% came from IPOPHL’s own monitoring and reports from other government agencies, while 9 or 6% of the complaints came from the intellectual property rights holders themselves. This data came from the IP Rights Enforcement Office (IEO).

Counterfeiting is still the major source of reports with 114 complaints in total. 75% of those complaints are for apparel items, which shows that it’s still the most counterfeited item in the country. It’s followed by perfume and beauty products at 7%.

What’s alarming is the counterfeiting of pharmaceutical and medical products, which amounts to 4% of the total reports.

The remaining 37% are reports regarding piracy. Apparently, the most pirated contents are educational books and e-books, which account for 18 or 49%. They are followed by software, TV shows, and movies.

Piracy and intellectual property violations are most rampant on Facebook. It’s followed by e-commerce giant Shopee, then Lazada, Instagram, and Carousell.

Despite this, the IEO commends the people who reported, which helps in “creating a more alert IP environment amid rising demand for content and renewed consumer appetite.”

She added that “The surge of counterfeiting and piracy reports since the start of the Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has then been met with our stronger IP awareness and enforcement efforts to counter this trend.”

Edillon added that IP rights holders can use the IP protection features of online platforms to discover more ways to counter violations. If all else fails, the rights holders can file a formal complaint to the IPOPHL.

  1. If you want to find counterfeit items just search on shopee or lazada. It is so common that it is hard to find real items. That is what zalora is for. In fact, the last few times I’ve tried to shop on shopee/lazada I’ve walked away unable to buy what I wanted. There were listings, but they were all accounts with no purchase history and usernames made of random strings. The platforms do nothing to curb this problem–it is a low effort thing to solve. They also make it difficult to filter effectively and just do odd things. Lazada shows me search for results for out of stock items. Shopee shows me ready stock results for items that ship in 2 weeks.
