To help the national government’s goal to make the Philippines a “tourism hub”, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will roll out free internet services in 94 major tourist destinations in the country that are experiencing connectivity issues.
Together with the Department of Tourism (DOT), the DICT saw digitalization and connectivity issues as some of the roadblocks in promoting the Philippines as a top tourist destination.

The DOT has provided the DICT with a list of 94 tourist destinations that are experiencing connectivity problems.
As per DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy, the list will be the blueprint for the joint free internet project. However, he clarified that only 46 sites will be covered initially. Phase one of the project will benefit those that are in Palawan, Aklan, Cebu, and Benguet.

Uy said that the free WiFi hotspot will make sure that tourists will have a “complete experience” while appreciating local tourist spots.
“Many of the tourists now are also vloggers. They vlog about their experiences while they are there experiencing or enjoying the tourism sites so it’s critical that we provide them with internet connectivity,” Uy said.
