Grab is one of the most dominant ride-hailing services in the country due to its market share and innovation, and one of their recent improvements is adding a Family Account feature. This is similar to what Spotify or YouTube implements for shared services, and easier account management and payment.
With Grab’s Family Account, you can now enroll your family members and say hello to peace of mind, as you can ensure that your family is traveling safely to their destination. This is particularly helpful for students, PWDs, and senior citizens, as it will be easier to track their travels because of real-time updates and centralized payment.
With the Grab Family Account, you can:
- Book rides on their behalf – to help your family members get to their appointments on time, rain or shine.
- Track their journey – to ensure your loved ones aren’t lost while receiving timely notifications from waiting, to pick up, and drop-off.
- Pay them upfront and monitor spending – to settle the payment before the trip starts, and track all your transactions within the Grab app.
Like a regular Grab booking would go, you still have control over who sees your information for every transaction and ensure that it’s a safe ride.
Who can use the Grab Family account?
You can nominate up to nine (9) members into your Family Account, as long as they are 18 years old and above. You’ll also start receiving trip updates from your Grab app.
However, it’s important to note that Grab users can only create one (1) Family Account. You also can’t create a separate Family Account if you’re already a member in a different Family Account.
How to set up your Grab Family account
Setting up your Family Account is straightforward.
Note: Please ensure that your Grab app is updated.
Step 1: Open your Grab app. In the screen, tap Account, followed by ‘Create Family Account.’

Step 2: Agree on the Terms of Service and click ‘Continue.’

Step 3: Select and add family members from your contact list to your Family Account.
Once you accepted the Terms of Service, you can add your family members by inviting them through either:
- Quick Invite – This will generate a custom link you can send to your family members you wish to invite to the Family Account and wait for them to approve it.
- Manual Invite – This will open your phonebook so you can choose your family members’ numbers or enter their phone numbers.

Step 3b. Wait for family members to join the Family Account.
Invited family members will receive a prompt on their Grab app, which they have to accept to join the Family Account. Once they do, they will appear on the member list.

Step 4: Select a payment method.
Once you have created your Family Account and added the members, you will nominate a payment method that your family members will share for a centralized payment.

Book a ride with a Grab Family account
Members of the Family Account can use it to book rides.
Step 1: Enter your pickup and drop off locations on the map.
Step 2: Family members can choose the Family Account Profile.
Instead of the usual personal ride, family members can choose the Family Account profile, which will allow you to track their travel activities.

If the profile is set to the default (Personal), you can click it and select ‘Family.’

Step 3: Click ‘Book.’
Afterwards, the family member can sit back, relax, and enjoy a hassle-free ride, without even thinking of the fare because it will be billed to the family account owner.
Grab’s Family Account feature may not be a major innovation by the app. Still, it’s a welcome addition for families who want to ensure their family members can travel safely without considering the fare.
