Globe Telecom revealed that it will be offering space-based cellular broadband services in the Philippines.

Per its signed memorandum of understanding with US-based satellite telecom AST SpaceMobile, Globe will tap into what is claimed to be the world’s first space-based cellular broadband network.

Once launched, Globe says this cutting-edge technology will allow the company to expand its coverage area to regions in the archipelago not covered by its land-based cellular towers. The company also said the tech will help in its mission to bring economic growth and quality education to rural communities.

Planned services to be offered include voice, video and internet access through 2G, LTE and 5G signals, all of which are designed for resilience to ensure availability and connectivity even when disasters and emergencies strike.

No rollout schedule for the planned services has been disclosed.
