We’re getting really close into entering the 5G era as more and more tech companies have already developed and tested different technologies that are 5G-enabled. But one of those who is actually in the forefront of this revolution is OPPO and Qualcomm.
Just recently, OPPO announced that they have successfully tested 5G signaling and data linking using a smartphone that is already available in the market. The device that they are referring to is the OPPO R15.
OPPO modified the said device and rigged it with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem. This hardware will basically allow the smartphone to receive and transmit 5G signal.
The signaling and data connectivity that was tested was based on the 3GPP Release 15 NSA standard, which used a 10MHz bandwidth for 4G LTE and 20MHz on 5G NR n78. As per OPPO, they expect that the n78 band is going to be the most used frequency when 5G goes mainstream.
That’s the reason why they believe that the test that they are doing will greatly accelerate the availability of 5G-equipped devices to the market.
This is not the first time that OPPO stumbled upon a 5G development breakthrough. Earlier this year, the company was able to successfully make the world’s first 5G video call. They were also able to showcase an impressive 1.4Gbps of download and 160Mbps of upload speeds.
All of these tests came from OPPO’s initiative to put up a research institute, which is tasked to develop 5G and AI technologies, as well as other innovations for the industry.
