Once considered hard-to-reach areas to serve with the internet, the islands of Bantayan and Camotes in Cebu will finally get a taste of fast and solid internet access, thanks to PLDT’s effort in connecting the landmasses to its fiber-optic network.

Via the project, Bantayan Island had established a link to Daanbantayan, which is also a location within the province of Cebu and one of its gateways to Luzon. An earlier submarine cable also landed in Brgy. Kabac, which, as of May, gave the island a link to Bacolod City.

On June 19, Camotes Island followed suit, rendering it linked to both Ormoc and Mandaue City.

With PLDT’s fiber-optic network now reaching the otherwise remote islands, it paves way for subsidiary company Smart to leverage its mobile services in the area, tapping on either 4G/LTE or 5G.

While part of the initiative is indeed to establish a solid connection with two of Cebu’s major atolls, it also serves to reinforce the fiber links and boost the network’s resiliency, maintaining PLDT’s customers’ connectivity on the internet.
