There’s nothing like playing triple-A games at home with your powerful, no-compromise gaming PC. But what if you really need to go out? Say, for a business trip, after-school shenanigans, vacation, or hanging out at a friend’s house? Obviously, you won’t be able to take your entire rig with you.
Fortunately, the new 13th-gen Intel mobile processors can provide killer gaming performance that could easily match — if not beat — a lot of desktop gaming rigs today. This kind of performance can be found on modern laptops like the one we’re taking a look at right now, the Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 gaming machine from Lenovo.
With the latest chips from Intel and an array of powerful hardware packed in a compact package, we’ll detail how the Lenovo Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 can provide desktop-level gaming anytime and anywhere you are. Let’s begin!
Powered by Intel’s fastest gaming mobile CPU to date

Intel’s 13th-gen mobile CPU is the brand’s fastest to date. Its top-tier model, the Intel Core i9-13950HX, offers up to 89% more FPS on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (now CS2), one of the most competitive shooter games in the world. It also provides up to 52% more frames on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Lenovo Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 we have is the top-of-the-line model that sports a 13th-gen Intel Core i7-13700H processor with 14 cores, 20 threads, 24MB L3 cache, and clock speeds of up to 5GHz.
Paired with an extremely generous 32GB of DDR5 RAM and speedy 1TB of M.2 NVMe SSD storage, you got a machine that’s not just for gaming, but also for multitasking and creative work.
Here are some benchmark scores you can check out to see its potential:

Handles competitive and AAA games smooth as butter

With the powerful cores of the new 13th-gen Intel processor, together with its smart efficiency features, modern connectivity such as WiFi 6e and Bluetooth 5.2, beefy cooling with vents all around, and robust NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, you get a laptop that provides uncompromised gaming performance wherever you are.
The Lenovo Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 has three (3) performance modes, which you can easily switch to by pressing Fn + Q. You can also tell which mode you’re in via the on-display pop-up or the color of the LED light at the power button: Quiet Mode (Blue), Performance Boost (Red), and Balanced (White).
We tested a couple of our favorite games under Quiet and Performance modes, with the results listed below:
Game GFX Settings | Quiet Mode | Performance Boost Mode |
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Maxed) | Min: 15 FPS Max: 157 FPS Average: 42 FPS | Min: 21 FPS Max: 152 FPS Average: 64 FPS |
GTA V (Maxed) | Min: 15 FPS Max: 205 FPS Average: 121 FPS | Min: 30 FPS Max: 308 FPS Average: 149 FPS |
Forza Motorsport (Ultra) | Average: 37 FPS | Average: 47 FPS |
Counter-Strike 2 (Maxed) | Average: 130 FPS | Average: 170 FPS |
Starfield (Ultra) | Average: 44 FPS | Average: 51 FPS |
Valorant (Maxed) | Average: 263 FPS | Average: 323 FPS |
If you want to take advantage of the high refresh rate, simply lower the graphics settings to get more FPS. In Red Dead Redemption 2 at Low and Medium settings, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 was able to average around 100 to 140FPS consistently.
Forza Motorsport was playable under Ultra settings, but it’s best to leave the graphics settings under Auto as the game is smart enough to find the right balance between graphics quality and smoothness. Meanwhile, Counter-Strike 2 had no problem running on 130 FPS under Quiet Mode, but if you’re a professional player, enable the Performance Boost for extra frames and smoothness of the gameplay.
A powerful tool for professionals: from emails to video editing

You’ve seen how it performs in games, so expect nothing less in terms of productivity. If you’re a user looking for a device that can handle both your gaming and work needs, the Legion Slim 5i Gen 8 is a good option for you.
It has a comfortable keyboard for replying to emails, a dedicated numpad on the side for spreadsheets, a large 16-inch display so you can multitask with two apps side-by-side, and a decent battery life to accomplish work in a coffee shop, a plane, or anywhere without having to carry the power cable.
Creative professionals, especially photographers, would appreciate its accurate display for color grading, and large storage to store ongoing projects, while video editors would admire its fast render speeds.
Stunning visuals and audio for the complete experience

All the machine’s power and capabilities are projected on a pretty sharp display. What we have here is a large 16-inch WQXGA IPS screen that makes things really immersive.
It also has a high 240Hz refresh rate for gaming, and other bells and whistles like Dolby Vision, DisplayHDR 400, and NVIDIA G-SYNC. Oh, and it has an anti-glare coating if you’re gaming outside in a coffee shop or restaurant.

More than the display, we really loved the built-in speakers. It has 2x 2W stereo speakers with Nahimic Audio. Watching movies on Netflix and Disney+ was really enjoyable with its great screen and speaker setup.
The stereo separation is really audible, so you can distinctly hear where footsteps are coming from in shooter games like Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant, giving you that competitive advantage even if you’ve left your headphones at home.
All the ports you might ever need

Despite all the cooling vents it has, Lenovo didn’t skimp on I/O for the Legion Slim 5i Gen 8. All provide ultra-fast speeds and flexibility — no need for pesky dongles.
Around the back, we have a full-size HDMI port, ethernet, power connector, and two ultra-fast USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports with one having an Always On function.

On the left side, we have two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports for easy access, one with DisplayPort 1.4. We also have the headphone/mic headphone jack here. The right has an SD card reader.
Clean, compact, no-fuss design

Here’s an unpopular opinion: over-the-top and aggressive for-gamers design are starting to become exhausting. Thankfully, Lenovo stuck to their clean design language with the Legion Slim 5i Gen 8. It has a clean metallic grey finish, with a shiny Legion logo on the top left of the lid, which is the only pizzazz it needs.
The large vents on the sides and front not only help with airflow but will also let people know that it means business despite its gaming-centric looks. With this design, you may use it not just for gaming but also for business and productivity.

When buying Legion products such as the Legion Slim 5i Gen 8, customers are also entitled to Legion Ultimate Support, the only gamer-centric support service that gives you 24/7 access via chat, phone, or email to experts who are knowledgeable in gaming-related hardware optimization, in-game settings, and software assistance to some of the most prominent AAA titles and more. In addition, Lenovo offers a 3-year Accidental Damage Protection guarantee, which is perfect for those who want peace of mind.
It also comes with on-site support and speedy repair services to make sure your hardware is always in tip-top condition. There’s really nothing like top-notch after-sales support service to come with your fancy new hardware.
The Lenovo Legion Slim 5i is now available in the Philippines with a starting price of Php129,995.
