TECNO has announced a new multi-skin tone color card at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024. This color card features the industry’s largest and most accurate skin tone database that will enhance TECNO’s Universal Tone technology algorithm to ensure accurate representation of every skin tone in photos, promoting inclusivity in mobile portrait photography.
There’s no denying that there’s quite a bias in mobile portrait technology due to a lack of objective evaluation indicators for measuring multiple skin tones. To address this issue, TECNO developed a multi-skin tone color card using international standard skin color collection methods to collect 2,838 skin color spectral data points. Through rigorous analysis in the CIELAB space, TECNO established 268 skin tone patches based on this large database, resulting in the industry’s largest and most intricate skin tone database.
TECNO has developed the multi-skin tone color card to evaluate the color accuracy of various skin tone images. This card helps fine-tune the algorithms of Universal Tone’s multi-skin tone imaging technology, including skin color restoration and improvement algorithms. This advancement by TECNO aims to enhance the accuracy of each skin tone, setting a high standard for multi-skin tone imaging technology in the industry.
“For years, imaging technology has not encapsulated skin tone diversity. While AI promises much to overcome this, it is often trained with historically biased data. TECNO’s multi-skin tone color card solves this issue scientifically by collecting mass amounts of unbiased data, and by integrating it with more advanced AI into TECNO’s camera system, TECNO has been able to truly capture the beauty of diverse skin tones.” said Dr. Kaida Xiao, Associate Professor in Colour and Imaging Science at the University of Leeds.
TECNO is dedicated to advancing technologies that accurately capture the diversity of human beauty. The new multi-skin tone color card is a step forward in Universal Tone’s mission for inclusivity in mobile imaging, as well as to embrace the uniqueness of every culture and celebrate all forms of beauty.
