The future of food, farming and the Earth’s collective plant life will likely intertwine deeply with robotics. Scientists at Singapore have successfully merged machinery with a Venus flytrap, allowing them to control the carnivorous plant to snap its jaws with just a push of a smartphone app button.

To do so, the scientists at Nanyang Technological University created a high-tech system to establish communication with plant life. The system involved securing plants to electrodes, which is then used to detect as well as produce weak electrical pulses to control the plants. Another feat in the research was the attachment of a robotic arm into a plant, with the arm capable of catching falling objects.

Further research into plant-robot hybrids, according to the scientists, could lead to early detection of plant diseases. It is also seen as a possible way to address the looming threats of climate change to crops and other plant life.
