MyPhone has recently added a new smartphone to its portfolio of affordable Android devices. Priced at only Php2,988, the MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G is one of the company’s cheap yet exciting devices.

There’s not much in terms of the specs (listed below) as the MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G is intended as a budget phone for the Android newbie. But when using the overhyped Torque Droidz Blast X as comparison, MyPhone’s cheaper offering isn’t exactly that bad. Many of its better specs more than make up for the smaller display. In fact, some early online previews describe the device as capable of running games such as Candy Crush and Temple Run 2 at decent frame rates.

MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G Specs

  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 3.5-inch capacitive 2-point touchscreen (350×480), ~170ppi
  • 1GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6572M processor
  • Mali-400 GPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • microSD support up to 32GB
  • 3.2-megapixel main camera, without autofocus and LED flash
  • 1.3-megapixel front camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPRS, EDGE, 3G
  • Bluetooth
  • Li-Ion 1300mAh battery

A notable feature in MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G is the company’s anti-theft technology called Theft Apprehension and Asset Recovery Application (TARA). It’s an app that, when activated via a phone call or SMS message, causes the device to become unusable, as well as shout out “Magnanakaw! (Thief!)” incessantly. Bypassing this security feature should be hard for hackers to accomplish, given that TARA is placed deep within the chipset level of the device. In other words, rooting, re-flashing, factory resets, and Android updates don’t compromise the effectiveness of TARA. MyPhone users may not be able to prevent the inevitable theft, but they can at least lock the device so the thief can’t make money off of it.

MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G Infosheet

The MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G also sports a dual-SIM configuration, although only one SIM module comes with the titular 3G connectivity. While the battery has only 1,300mAh capacity, the small display’s light power consumption should allow the handset to last for long hours.

For Php1,000 less, consumers can also opt for a 2G variant. Most of its specs are similar to MyPhone Agua RAIN 3G, but the internal storage this time is just 512MB.
