Samsung has finally embraced a feature from Android that it had been ignoring for almost a decade: the Seamless Update. The Galaxy A55 is the pioneering device in Samsung’s lineup to incorporate this functionality, but it is expected to extend to additional Galaxy models in the near future.

The seamless update feature operates by applying software updates to an alternate system partition rather than the active one. Following this, the device boots from the updated partition after the next restart. This switch between the primary and secondary partitions occurs every time a new update is deployed.

Samsung’s seamless update integration can be seen on the Galaxy A55 5G‘s very first firmware update, which includes a security patch, new features, and stability improvements. Future updates for the device are anticipated to follow this smooth and uninterrupted process, to make software updates more hassle-free.

Users can recognize when their Galaxy phones are performing a seamless update through the progress bar during download and installation. This bar displays two phases: “Downloading and installing…” followed by “Verification.”

The initial reboot following a seamless update may take slightly longer, up to 90 seconds in order to apply the necessary changes. However, the advantage is that users will no longer have to wait through the customary loading screens and animations that previously prevented phone usage during updates.

Implementing seamless updates requires having dual system partitions, which inherently means more system storage space is required. Despite this, the available user storage on the Galaxy A55 appears to remain unaffected in comparison to other Galaxy phones that do not have this feature.
