Many Gen Z Filipinos prefer to fly solo at work.

HMO provider PhilCare recently commissioned a study, “Wellness Index: An Updated ABC of Pinoy Gen X, Y, and Z,” which indicates that 55 percent of Filipino employees who are part of Gen Z—those born between 1997 and 2012—prefer working on their own as opposed to working with a team.

But this preference is not limited to that generation. A substantial portion of Gen X and Gen Z Filipino employees, or those born between 1965 and 1981 and between 1981 and 1995, respectively, expressed the same sentiment. The study found that 50 percent from each of these generations are inclined to work independently.

Gen Z Filipinos are also inclined towards seeking opportunities abroad, as only 48 percent from that generation indicated that they prefer to work in the Philippines, according to the study. A slim majority of the older generations, at 54 percent, expressed the same preference.

PhilCare President and CEO Jaeger Tanco suggested that Gen Z’s preference for independent work reflects their desire to demonstrate their skills, that they value self-direction in their careers.

Tanco also noted that the motivation of Gen X and Y workers, despite being less inclined to seek jobs abroad, remain consistent with those of Gen Z. It’s to experience new cultures and achieve personal growth. Tanco emphasized that gaining experience abroad can improve a person’s competitiveness and appeal in the global job market.
