International Data Corporation (IDC) has revealed that the tablet market has finally bounced back from the pandemic era. On its latest Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, the intelligence firm noted that there were 34.4 million tablets shipped in Q2 2024, a massive 22.1% year-over-year growth.
This improvement is attributed to product refreshes from top mobile brands and the regular replacement cycle. However, these volumes are only comparable to pre-pandemic levels, not the extraordinary sales seen during the global health crisis.
In the quarter, Apple managed to ship12.3 million units, showing an 18.2% year-over-year growth. The launch of the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models contributed to this growth. Despite positive growth globally, Apple faced competition from Xiaomi and Huawei in China, impacting iPad volumes negatively. It’s important to note that other brands like OPPO, HONOR, and vivo are also growing their lineup, which could further shake up Apple’s growth in the Chinese market.
Samsung achieved second place in 2Q24 with 6.9 million units shipped, showing a growth of 18.6% compared to the previous year. This growth was driven mainly by commercial deployments, as there were no major product launches from South Korean giant during this time period.
On third place, Lenovo got a year-over-year growth of 16.7% with 2.5 million units shipped. Lenovo’s detachable tablets experienced a significantly higher annual growth rate of 39.7% compared to its slate tablets, which only increased by 11.7%.
Huawei took the fourth position with a 40.3% year-over-year growth and 2.3 million shipments. Meanwhile, Xiaomi snagged the fifth spot with its impressive 94.7% year-over-year growth. Aside from the Asia Pacific and China, Xiaomi also managed to increase its shipments in the European region.
