Curious to know what topics Filipinos were the most interested in in 2023? Google has the answer.

The search engine giant just released its Google Year in Search 2023, a compilation of top trending keywords and most searched topics for Filipinos.

One of the most used keywords is SIM registration, a new law implemented earlier this year. We’re also seeing a lot of NBA games, lyrics to local top hits, and updates on local and international natural disasters.

The year 2023 is the year of the SIM Card Registration Act, which is one of the biggest developments in the telco/mobile industry in the last few years. Hence, it’s no surprise that it topped Google’s most trending in the News category.

Of course, there’s the “precinct finder” due to the recent barangay election. Plus, the War in Israel, natural calamities and viruses, and of course, “lato-lato” which we’re thankful to not survive 2023.

We also have Japanese actor Mackenyu Maeda, who became popular by playing Roronoa Zoro from Netflix’s live adaptation of One Piece.

Emily Rudd, another star of Netfllix’s One Piece, is also on the list, as well as another rising star Jenna Ortega from the show Wednesday.

We’ve lost a couple of big, prominent personalities this year. Based on Google’s trending searches for 2023, Filipinos were the most affected by the death of Mike Enriquez, one of the most popular newscasters in the country known for his distinct delivery, voice, and antics.

Matthew Perry, known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing from Friends, was also taken from the world this year. Singer-songwriter Tina Turner, known for hits like “The Best”, also died in 2023.

The show also landed on Netflix this year to reach more people.

James Arthur’s Say You Won’t Let Go topped Filipinos’ most-searched songs or lyrics. Juan Karlos’s ERE was also all over the radio and everyone’s playlist in 2023 picking interest from everyone, as well as SunKissed Lola’s Pasilyo, and of course, Lola Amour’s hit Raining In Manila.

Mayonnaise’s 2004 classic Jopay also made a comeback this 2023.

A big chunk of 2023 was spent on “Barbenheimer” after the hype surrounding the simultaneous release of two very contrasting movies: Greta Gerwig’s bright and vibrant fantasy comedy Barbie, and Christopher Nolan’s dark, dramatic movie about the scientist that led the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer. Both films received box office success and received critical acclaim.

The fourth installment in the John Wick series was also released in 2023, as well as another Insidious Movie, Extraction 2, and the curious movie called The Menu.
