Amazon, one of the biggest e-commerce platforms in the world, has been testing drone deliveries for years. Now, it looks like the futuristic logistic system is ready to roll out for public use as the company has picked a location where it will be first available.

The company has chosen Lockeford, California in the United States among one of the first who will receive their Amazon deliveries using drones.

Amazon says that they are currently working with Lockeford local government and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to acquire the necessary permits.

Besides the obvious reason, one motivation why drones will be used is due to their ability to fly beyond line of sight. They were programmed to drop deliveries at the doorstep of Lockeford customers, a town of about 4,000 residents. This should make deliveries more efficient.

Amazon has been pushing drone delivery for years but has been hindered by regulatory issues.

Back in 2019, Amazon built its own self-piloting drones. These machines run entirely on electricity and have a carrying capacity of around 2.2kg.

These autonomous drones were created to deliver orders within 30 minutes of purchase under its Amazon Prime Air service.
