Annoyed by people on your daily commute trying to take a peek at your smartphone screen? Or are people at the office trying to peek at sensitive or confidential documents you’re working on your computer? Apple is reportedly working on a new tech to address that.

On every Apple display announcement, the company has always highlighted the improved color quality, brightness, and great viewing angles. However, they have yet to deal with visual privacy.

Now, Apple has been reportedly researching for ways to keep their screens as great as possible, while also keeping them private and for-your-eyes-only.

A discovered patent filing reveals that Apple is working on two approaches. First, there are the “privacy films for curved displays”, which will put a polarizing film-like material on top of the display so the light will only come out of a single direction.

That single direction is directed towards the users, meaning everyone on your left or right side you will only see a blurry image. Albeit, it won’t be able to block anyone that’s looking in the same line of sight.

The second method feels more advanced and cleaner. Instead of slapping a polarized film, Apple proposes to alter the viewing angle of the display itself. “Displays with adjustable angles of view,” the patent reads.

Such displays will have an “electrically controllable filter,” that will allow users to adjust how polarized or not the display will be. The tech will be integrated into the screen using a couple of substrate layers.

The patent also shows that the technology will add an extra layer of liquid crystal element between the polarizing layers. The said element could have a color filter, making images with specific colors only visible to the user. That may look more impractical than hiding the entire screen, but, there were actually organizations in the early days that printed documents in specific color pages for privacy.

Again, this is still in the early stages, and we may still see other alternatives from Apple leaked soon.
