In an effort to boost tourism and economic development, Dumaguete City is planning to transform a 174-hectare into a highly urbanized district dubbed “Smart City.”
With a Php23-billion investment and a five-year target, the Smart City project is a joint venture between public and private sectors as proposed by construction firm EM Cuerpo Inc. It will employ modern technologies, such as green energy power generation and eco-friendly building systems, to provide smart services and facilities for health, housing, transportation, and other necessities.

According to Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, the Smart City will be constructed without any expense made by the local government. He also said that the project will introduce thousands of jobs and income opportunities.
The Smart City project is awaiting approval from the national government. While supported by various sectors in the city, the project also faces challenges from environmental scientists. As a reclamation project, it will affect and displace hundreds of species of marine life.
