Chinese tech giant HUAWEI is set to retaliate in a major way after enduring for years the effects of the U.S. sanctions, which banned them from utilizing American components in their products, including Android.

HUAWEI unveiled HarmonyOS as an alternative to Android. The operating system runs on its own, but still really on Android-based apps to become entirely usable. But, that independence will soon be gone as the company already seeded the developer preview for HarmonyOS Next. Unveiled last year, this upgraded HarmonyOS is set to drop Android support.

While they did punish HUAWEI in the first few years, what the US government seemed to have done was awaken a beast as the Chinese company was forced to push hard and create its own technology.

To achieve full independence, HUAWEI had to build its own ecosystem of apps and developers. The company has already promised development with more than 200 development partners, with over 280 companies, and more than 300 educational institutions. HUAWEI aims to have over 5,000 partners before 2024 ends.

The first developer versions of HarmonyOS Next have already been seeded so developers can start working on their apps. A public version is expected to arrive before 2024 ends.
