Remember the iPhone batterygate issue from late 2016? Well, that lawsuit is finally wrapping as Apple starts sending out settlement payments to iPhone users.

For a quick background, it’s been discovered in 2016-2017 after months of investigations and court hearings that Apple has been deliberately slowing down iPhones as the battery degrades. It’s been regarded by some as planned obsolescence and a display of anti-consumerism.

Apple brought the said power management feature on iOS 10.2.1 but initially failed to mention the update in the release notes.

Back then, Apple issued an apology and temporarily made battery replacements cheaper. However, Apple is insistent that it didn’t commit any legal wrongdoing, but has agreed to accept the settlement to “avoid burdensome and costly litigation.”

The lawsuit includes U.S. residents who owned the involved iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, or iPhone SE that were running on iOS 10.2.1, as well as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus at iOS 11.2 or later, before December 21, 2017.

MacRumors reported that two of their readers already received USD92.17 (~Php5,000) per claim from Apple.

If you’re just thinking of getting a claim, you may have already missed your chance as the deadline to submit a claim for a payment was in October 2020.
