If you’re looking for a slim and powerful notebook but don’t want to splurge on an Ultrabook, the Lenovo IdeaPad 14-inch Z400 and 15.6 inch Z500 might be perfect for you. They’re 25% slimmer when compared to your typical notebook, but compromise on none of the performance.

In fact, the IdeaPad Z400 and Z500 are both equipped with standard voltage processors, rather than the feeble ULV processors that are normally found in Ultrabooks.

The IdeaPad Z400 can be powered by up to a 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor, while the Z500 can be powered by up to a 3rd generation Intel Core i5. The graphics can be handled by anywhere from an Intel HD Graphics 4000 solution up to an Nvidia GeForce GT 450M dedicated graphics chip. Fancy playing Black Ops 2 on your lunch break? The Nvidia variants are just screaming your name.

Also, keep in mind that these are not Ultrabooks, but full-fledged notebooks. That means you get a full array of wired connectivity and optical drive options that are usually forgone on Ultrabooks. I find this to be particularly appealing since I still find DVD writers to be invaluable, even on the go.

The IdeaPad Z400 and Z500 come with a number of innovative features that you won’t see on a typical spec sheet. For example, there is the Backlit AccuType keyboard, which should especially come in handy for those who haven’t completely mastered the skill of touch-typing and tend to work in dimly lit environments. Then there’s the Intelligent TouchPad, which has been optimized to recognize smart gestures for zooming, scrolling and rotating UI elements that will help maximize your Windows 8 experience.

I should also mention that both the Z400 and Z500 come in touchscreen and non-touch versions. The touchscreen versions have 10-point multitouch support so multitasking within the Windows 8 touch environment can be maximized. However, keep in mind that the touchscreen versions won’t be released on Philippine shores until some time in April.
