With a wide selection of phones and increasing availability and speeds, 5G technology is becoming the norm. Looking ahead, smartphone manufacturer OPPO is making strides in 6G research and development. The company recently published a 6G whitepaper that outlines its vision and proposed advancements for next-gen mobile communication systems.

OPPO’s whitepaper, titled “A Versatile 6G with Minimized Kernel: To Build the Mobile World,” proposes a design in which 6G capabilities are modularized, allowing for intelligent splicing of modules to address specific needs and applications. The aim is to make future 6G networks more adaptable and efficient.

Integration of artificial intelligence is a key component in this vision. The whitepaper sees future 6G networks capable of transmitting AI models and agents that will lead to a convergence of intelligently managed devices on the internet of things (IoT) infrastructure. Such development is designed to bridge the virtual and real worlds, laying the groundwork for the metaverse and a truly mobile global environment.

The whitepaper also discusses optimizations for clouding, critical and ubiquitous IoT, and sensing capabilities. The company believes these subsystems can be dynamically combined or switched using AI to serve different industries effectively. For example, 6G could help overcome in geographic and financial barriers with a non-terrestrial subnetwork powered by satellite communications.

OPPO recognizes that 6G is still in its early stages, but that hasn’t stopped the company to lead in 6G research. It started initial research into the technology in 2019, covering AI integration, zero-power communication, user-centric designs, among others. The company has also expressed its commitment to continuing the expansion of 5G accessibility while pioneering 6G innovation.

OPPO originally released its 6G whitepaper in 2023, shortly before it showcased 6G-based prototype devices at the MWC23. You can read the whitepaper here.
