Corning Incorporated, in partnership with Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd., announced that the latter is the first mobile device manufacturer to adopt Corning’s latest cover glass technology, the Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 was first unveiled last month, claiming to be the company’s most durable cover glass to date.
Research says that users drop their smartphone on average seven times a year. With this, Corning scientists engineered a completely new material to address the problems of multiple drops.
In lab tests, Gorilla Glass 6 survived an average of 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces compared to soda lime and aluminosilicate glass compositions which did not survive even the first drop.
In addition to OPPO’s new upcoming flagship model R17 using the Gorilla Glass 6, OPPO was also one of the leading users of Gorilla Glass 5 — featured in the newly launched OPPO Find X and R15 models.
Today, over 6 billion devices across 45 major brands wield the Corning Gorilla Glass.
