Access to knowledge should be free. With the newly formed partnership between Smart Communications and the Wikimedia Foundation, Filipino users can now access the world’s largest online encyclopedia through their mobile devices free of charge.

Said to be inspired by the Facebook Zero, the Wikipedia Zero project aims to grant free access to the online encyclopedia through mobile devices. It first launched in Malaysia in May 2012 and has now expanded to the Philippines via Smart’s cellular network. By simply using a SIM card from Smart, Talk ‘N Text, or Sun Cellular, Filipinos can have unlimited access to Wikipedia.

Smart’s mobile subscribers can browse Wikipedia without incurring data charges through the any of these access points:

  • m.wikipedia.org
  • zero.wikipedia.org

Official Wikipedia apps for iOS and Android, as well other Wikimedia sites, can also be used without additional data charges.

The Wikipedia Zero project for the Philippines will last until February 3, 2015.
