TECNO Mobile’s R&D labs just announced a new fruit of their labor, a rollable smartphone concept.
Dubbed the TECNO Phantom Ultimate, it rolls sideways to expand the 6.55-inch screen to a slightly wider 7.11 inches in under 2 seconds. This is made possible by a single-drive motor system, which immediately works by pressing a dedicated physical button.
When not extended, you get the said 6.55-inch display, which is similar to almost all smartphones we see today. The extra display real estate will rest on the back, which works as an Always-On Display (AOD) for notifications and other widgets that are yet to be announced.
The said display is a 7.11-inch On-Cell LTPO AMOLED panel that has a 2296 x 1596 pixel resolution, 388ppi, and apparently has 100% DCI-P3 color coverage. See it in action below.
TECNO claims that the device can be easily held with one hand, despite being 9.93mm thick, with the help of a grippy texture in the back and curved sides.
But then again, it’s a concept device. Also, we’ve already seen tons of rollable phone concepts, but we’re yet to see a market-ready product. Hence, we’re not expecting to see the TECNO Phantom Ultimate on store shelves anytime soon.
