Western Digital has recently revealed their latest advancement in storage technology: an SD card with a massive 4TB capacity. The unveiling of the world’s highest-capacity SD card took place at the 2024 NAB Show.
The release of the 4TB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDUC UHS-I is set for 2025, meaning tech enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on it. The card incorporates a UHS-I interface, which facilitates data transfer speeds of up to 104MB/s in its SDR104 mode. Additionally, it’s capable of sequential write speeds of at least 30MB/s. This level of performance is sufficient for recording videos in 8K resolution.

Back in 2018, the SD Association introduced the specs of the Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) cards, which hinted at future SD cards having the potential to store up to 128TB. While reaching a 4TB capacity has taken some time, further details about the NAND technology within the new card remain undisclosed by Western Digital, suggesting that even larger capacities might be on the horizon.
For those interested in high-resolution video recording requiring substantial storage space, Western Digital’s upcoming solution appears promising, albeit availability is not immediate. The pricing for the new 4TB card is yet to be confirmed, but considering that 1TB versions are currently priced around $150, consumers can anticipate a price point exceeding $600 for this high-capacity card.
