Following Verizon’s decision to close the door for Yahoo Groups last year, the 19-year-old discussion platform will finally close down on December 15, 2020.
Informing its avid users of the message, Verizon sent out emails to all its Yahoo Groups users while also leaving the same information on the actual Yahoo Groups website.
Despite its long staying power, Yahoo Groups has seen massive loss of users throughout the years as many have made a switch to social media or a more modern version of similar platforms, like Reddit, Facebook Groups, and Google Groups.
Without any plan to revive a dead service, Yahoo admits that the demise of Yahoo Groups was indeed as a result of “steady decline in usage over the last several years.”
Back in 2019, the company announced its plan towards the cessation of the Yahoo Groups, which is essentially a two-phase process—one, is a prevention of the creation of new contents after October 21 and two, is the eradication of user posted contents by December 21, 2019.
As of writing, Verizon has prevented users from creating any more groups in the discussion board, leaving only the email functionality of the site active.
