PLDT Inc.’s mobile network division, Smart Communications, just announced that its 5G commercial service is set to go live on July 30, 2020.
The initial phase of the Smart 5G rollout will benefit Smart Signature, Smart Infinity, and other Smart postpaid subscribers. The service will be initially available in key business districts around Metro Manila.
These areas include Bonifacio Global City central business district in Taguig, Makati Central Business District, Ortigas CBD, Araneta City in Cubao, SM Megamall and SM Mall of Asia Bay Area.
Smart is also launching 5G coverage in high-traffic locations like Taft Avenue in Manila, North Avenue in Quezon City, and Clark Green City in Pampanga.
The service is accessible to Smart-certified smartphones and 5G-activated SIM cards. The telco has partnered with big brands such as Samsung, Huawei, Realme, and Vivo to bundle their 5G-enabled smartphones with Smart Signature plans. Some of the yet to be released smartphones should be added on the list of 5G phones available in the Philippines.
Both PLDT and Smart have invested about Php260 billion in the last five years for the 5G deployment here in the Philippines.
The Smart 5G rollout was announced shortly after President Rodrigo Duterte demanded telcos to improve their services or face closure.
